NOTE: IN DECEMBER OF 2014 THE "ABLE ACT" WAS ENACTED WHICH GIVES FAMILIES DOING SPECIAL NEEDS PLANNING A NEW TOOL WHICH MIGHT BE USEFUL. GENERALLY SPEAKING THIS WILL NOT BE A GOOD OPTION FOR PARENTS LEAVING ASSETS TO A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY. HOWEVER, TO FIND OUT WHEN AND IF IT CAN BE USEFUL TO YOUR FAMILY, PLEASE SEE INFORMATION PROVIDED VIA THE LINK TO THE LEFT ENTITLED "ABLE Act 2014"
I practice in many areas of estate planning from the very basic to the highly complex. In addition, I do a lot of planning for families with a child with Special Needs. I am proud to be in the first group of attorneys in the state of Ohio certified as a Specialist in Estate Planning, Probate and Trust law by the Ohio State Bar Association. I now sit on the specialization certification board.
This web site was designed to help you understand the basics of estate planning and associated tax and probate issues. This site is organized by how the information is presented and then by estate planning topic.
Start with the Frequently Asked Estate Planning Questions (FAQs) to familiarize yourself with basic concepts and current tax and probate laws. If you have a little more time, enjoy the on-line slide presentations. Full color slides and accompanying text will introduce you to important issues with real life examples. Also read the article on Special Needs Trusts.
To see how much the government will be taking from you, try out the Estate Tax Calculator. (You may be surprised by what you find!) In an effort to keep you up-to-date with current issues, an Articles area is also provided. For more detailed information about your specific situation, please contact me.
